Adopt-A-Gran: Kenya

In common with most West African countries, Kenya has a primarily rural economy.

Outside the capital city of Nairobi, the majority of people live in villages, with subsistence farming as their chief objective. One such village is Ahero, on the shores of Lake Victoria, in the Western part of the country.

An unusual feature of Ahero is the presence of an organization known as "Social Services Joot", which is determined to maintain the traditions of Luo life and the extended family system.

Many older people in the region are forced, by unfortunate circumstances, into living a life of solitude, usually in inadequate and dilapidated huts. Because the people are elderly, their homes are not considered worth repairing; villagers occasionally bring them food. For the most part, however, they are left to live out their final days as "Nature" sees fit.

Social Services "Joot" is attempting to change this outlook.
