Personal Information:Edna Samuel (KC) Case History:Edna will be 63 years old this year. She is a widow, who lives with her daughter and takes care of her grandchild. She used to work as a blade-packer in a factory, but now tries to earn money by doing housework and babysitting. With no pension and no regular source of income, Edna struggles to survive. Edna’s health is poor. She suffers from heart problems. Her leg swells and she cannot walk properly and is in need of X-rays to assess her adequate needs. Sponsorship for Edna would ensure that she has shelter, receives food, clothing and medical attention when necessary. Most importantly, your help will let her know that someone voluntarily cares about her situation. Kolkata (Calcutta) is the capital of the state of West Bengal and is approximately 160 kilometers inland from the Bay of Bengal. Within 30 years, the population of Kolkata grew from over 4.4 million in 1961 to over 12 million today. The impoverishment and the population explosion drove many of the poor from rural areas into the city. The result of this population explosion is that two thirds of Kolkata’s population lives in the officially recognized slums, and there are 30,000 people to each square kilometer. With no welfare system in India many of the elderly are forced to beg to support their daily needs.
